The Tawa Historian
Newsletter #57 – July 2022
Hello everybody
Apologies for the lack of newsletter for a few months, there doesn’t seem to have been a lot to say. However, a few news items to report.
Post Office box: The society has relinquished its PO box. The amount of recent (and projected) traffic using the box to communicate with the Society had dwindled to almost nothing. The executive therefore decided that the cost of maintaining the box did not justify its retention and so the subscription has not been renewed.
But fear not! If you wish to write to the Society, and don’t want to use an email, you can contact us at;
Tawa Historical Society,
c/o Tawa Community Centre,
7 Cambridge Street,
Tawa,
Wellington 5028.
Our ‘pigeon-hole’ in the Community Centre will still be checked on a regular basis for any incoming correspondence.
Archives
Our current archivist, Lois Mexted, would like to withdraw from her role with the Society.
Do you know someone (who perhaps knows someone else) who has an interest in, and the necessary skills, to help the Society maintain its collection of archived material.
If so please contact me or the Secretary to discuss the role and how it has worked for us in the past. Lois would be happy to help a new archivist transition into the role until they feel comfortable with it.
The role is not considered onerous. It involves:
• being familiar with what we do have preserved and how it’s recorded.
• responding to any internal and external queries received about Tawa’s history based on the above knowledge of what’s held.
• updating the records and safely storing the archived material as and when new items are received.
• maintaining a record of any items that might be loaned to a THS member or historian for research purposes; and
• being part of the THS executive committee and reporting significant developments with the archived collection to each meeting. The committee meets about every two months.
Chairman of THS – David Parsons 232-6339. Secretary of THS – Ken Woodgate 232-5901.
Annual General Meeting of the Society:
The Tawa Historical Society’s Annual General Meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Monday 29 August at the Community Centre in Cambridge Street, Tawa.
As is our custom, we have arranged for a guest speaker to address the meeting once the Society business part is concluded.
This year we have invited Rowan Carroll, Director of the NZ Police Museum in Porirua to speak. She will talk about the museum itself and any items of interest relating to crimes in/around Tawa held by the museum. Get your alibis ready so that you can attend this interesting talk!
We do hope that you will join us for this event.
Executive Committee:
The committee currently has eight members. Our constitution permits 10 and we would like to hear from anyone who would like to join us.
Some existing committee members have indicated their desire to step back from their roles over the next couple of years so we would like to invite new committee members to step forward, help share future loads and enable continuity to be maintained.
Activities in the near future:
We have booked a stall at the annual ‘Spring into Tawa’ event to be held on 29 October. We hope to see you there, supporting the Society and the wider community.
At around the same time, a Wellington-wide heritage event will be held from Tuesday 25 October to Sunday 6 November. We have been invited to participate and planning is currently underway to decide exactly what our involvement will entail. We will keep you posted on developments as they occur.
