The Tawa Historian
Newsletter #56 – November 2021
Dear Members and Friends and Supporters,
Greetings everybody.
Thank you for your continuing interest in and support of the Tawa Historical Society during 2021.
As Christmas approaches fast there is time for one more society event before the year ends. We hope that you will be able to join us.
Book Launch – The Streets of Tawa by Bruce Murray
The Streets of Tawa was the society’s first book, published in 2005. Bruce has extensively re-researched the street names and produced an updated book with new information and images that have come to hand in the interim. In addition, there are a few new streets that have been developed and named since 2005.
For those who already have the first edition, this new version will be a significant upgrade. For those who don’t already have the 2005 edition, you will want to buy one to learn more about the place we call home!
The book is being launched at the Tawa Community Centre in Cambridge Street at 7pm on Tuesday 23 November. The launch will be held in the lounge in the building that is nearest to the Main Road. Some light refreshments will be available. The function will conclude at about 8pm.
The book will for sale for $20 at the launch. Thereafter the retail cost will be $25.
These arrangements are of course subject to any COVID restrictions that may come into force in the interim. If anything changes, we will be in touch.
We hope that you can join us on the night.
Other projects on the go
The next book to be published will be the history of the Linden Tennis Club. This book was commissioned by the members of the former tennis club. The text and photographs have been handed to our regular designer, Wendy Cameron, for formatting into an attractive record of the club’s history. We anticipate launching this book with a function in the new year.
Bruce Murray’s retirement from the society’s executive has not seen him slow down at all in terms of research and writing. As foreshadowed in the recent AGM, he is working on a book that will include details of the first organised cricket club in Tawa Flat in the late 19th century.
Work is continuing on updating and reprinting the information sheets detailing walking routes through Tawa, and points of interest along the way. Also in the early stages of development is a proposed addition to the southern walking routes, documenting and marking the route taken by the railway line through the area between 1885 and 1937.
See you in 2022
This will probably be the last newsletter for 2021.
Wishing you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. On behalf of the society’s executive, we hope that you return safely from wherever you may spend your Christmas and New Year holidays (presumably within New Zealand) and look forward to your on-going support in 2022.
