The Tawa Historian
Newsletter #30 – October 2012
Dear members,
I am writing with good news. We have just taken delivery of copies of Best of Tawa, Volume 3. This completes the work we set out to accomplish in 2007; that is, to put into book form a series of articles Elsdon Best (1856 – 1931) wrote for a weekly newspaper, The Canterbury Times, between March and July of 1914. Entitled Porirua and those who settled it, the articles contained much material about earlier days, both Maori and pakeha, and includes information about Tawa Flat, where Elsdon was born, and the people of the valley in which we live.
As is our custom, we want the opportunity to celebrate with you this publication by launching it. This will take place
in the Mervyn Kemp Library, Main Road, Tawa
at 6.00pm on Wednesday 14 November 2012.
All members and friends of the Tawa Historical Society are most welcome to attend.
Elsdon Best’s work in placing his memories on paper was a significant effort, and we are grateful for what he has left to us. We still have a few copies of Volumes 1 and 2 for sale. We will sell the new volume at the same price, $20.00, that was charged for the previous volumes in 2008 and 2009. Volume 3 also contains a comprehensive index to all three volumes, and we are very grateful to Richard Herbert for the work he has done in creating the index.
If members of others wish to purchase all three volumes, we will sell such sets at $50.00. I look forward to seeing you all on 14 November.
With kind regards
Bruce Murray
