The Society’s inaugural meeting was held on 22 November 2001 and I am now pleased to report that the Society’s official Incorporation was registered on 30 April 2002. The Society is holding a meeting at 7.30pm, Monday 27 May 2002 at the Tawa Community Board (Council) Chambers, Cambridge Terrace, Tawa to seek advice and ideas from the membership about our current and future activities. The meeting is open to the public as well as members.
Anyone wishing to bring along items of historical interest in their possession for a ‘Show and Tell’ are encouraged to do so. We have in mind letters, documents, photos or other items of family memorabilia pertaining to Tawa as a place and the people who live or have lived within Tawa. Although the Society does not have facilities to receive items or copies of items at the present, we would appreciate the opportunity to register them for future reference. Members of the Committee will be available to record this information at the end of the meeting.
Chris Gaunt, a member of the management committee, will make a presentation about the research work he has been doing concerning the ‘Heritage Trail through Tawa’. This is based on the Old Porirua Road and the identification of historic buildings and sites along the trail. The Society is working with the Wellington City Council to have information about the Tawa section of the ‘Heritage Trail’ included in future brochures.
Pam Edmonds, also a member of the management committee, and helping with the ‘Heritage Trail’ project, will talk about the work she has undertaken to record old school ‘Admission and Withdrawal’ rolls in the area.
Barbara Adams who has been exploring with the Wellington City Council, ways that the Society’s interests can be accommodated in the redevelopment of Tawa ‘Mervyn Kemp Library and Service Centre’, and is consideration of this is ongoing at present.
Tell your friends there is still time to become a foundation member of the Tawa Historical Society Inc. up to and including 30 June 2002 and become part of the history of the future – an application form is enclose.
Looking forward to seeing you on 27 May 2002 and remember ALL WELCOME.
