Newsletter #26 – September 2011
Dear members and friends of the THS,
THS Calendar for 2012
The big news is that the wall calendar we have been preparing for some time has now been printed and will be available for purchase from the Tawa Library from 2 October 2011. It’s cost will be $20.00. Design and layout has been very generously handled by Wendy Cameron, and she has produced a most attractive calendar. Porirua Print have again been our printers.
Including the cover, there are 13 black and white photographs of Tawa (Flat) dating from 1901 to 1965. They cover a variety of subjects – the railway, some individuals, panoramas across the valley, the ‘town centre’, and aerial photos, some of which are obliques, and others are verticals. There is something of interest for everyone. Most people will find at least one photo which contains their house.
We think the Calendar would make a marvellous Christmas present. It is a good quality production, and contains much of interest, particularly for those who have lived in Tawa for some time; for those who once lived here but have moved away; and for any who have even a little interest in the suburb in which they live. And for only $20, it’s a great Christmas stocking filler.
We are grateful to those whose photos we have been able to use, and some of the views are quite outstanding in capturing the spirit and development of Tawa. It’s easy to forget that up until the 1950s, the main highway from Auckland to Wellington passed through Tawa Flat – gorse lined fences and all!
As this venture is something of an experiment for us we have only printed 100 copies, so it might be prudent to purchase earlier rather than later.
With kind regards and thanks for your support in 2011
