Tawa Historical Society Incorporated
The Tawa Historian
Newsletter #2 – 14 February 2002
Since the inaugural public meeting of the Tawa Historical Society on 22 November 2001, the management Committee has held meetings on the 10 December 2001 and on the 11 February 2002. At these meetings the Committee agreed to :
1. Identify the heritage trail through Tawa based on the Old Porirua Road from Wellington and have a booklet published showing buildings and sites of historic interest en-route.
2. Identify historic buildings and sites to ensure, where appropriate, that these are included in the Wellington City Council District Plan. Also where possible, have historic places / buildings included in the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Register.
Sub Committees are already working on these priority projects; also work is soon to start on the prospect of publishing handwritten notes about Tawa by the late Elsden Best whose family were early settlers in Tawa Flat.
The idea of a museum in Tawa is continuing to be considered, but this will take time. Meanwhile, the committee has been exploring having historic photographs and items displayed in a public area. The next meeting of the Society Management Committee is to be held on Monday 22 April 2002. In May an open general meeting for the members of the Tawa Historical Society is planned where potential new members and the general public are welcome. The date of the general meeting will be advertised. The work of the Society can only be sustained by the support of the members and others interested in establishing and maintaining Tawa’s historic heritage – therefore, the committee would welcome any suggestions of offers of help you can provide. Please don’t hesitate to contact our Secretary, Susan Butterworth on email: apphist (at) actrix.gen.nz or me through the Society’s address : Tawa Historical Society Inc., 94 Larsen Crescent, Tawa.
Membership: This now stands at 36 paid up members, if you have already joined the Society and paid you subscription, welcome! If not, please do and please persuade others to join – an application form is below.
